Pakistan fighting US war on terror: Imran

By Shamim Bano

KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan said on Saturday that Pakistan was fighting America's war on terror which had not only claimed the lives of thousands of Pakistanis but also badly affected the country's economy.

"The war on terror is the war of the United States but our rulers have made it a war of Pakistan," he said while addressing a large sit-in staged at the Native Jetty bridge against drone strikes in the tribal areas.

Imran said that before 9/11 there was not a single Taliban militant in Pakistan but ever since the country joined the war, it had been facing acts of terrorism adding that the rulers have already "fixed the match" with the United States on drone strikes. "Stop drone strikes, or we will block Nato supplies to Afghanistan," the emotionally charged cricketer-turned politician declared from the stage.

He said that the PTI would announce its future line of action on Sunday (today), the last day of the protest. The PTI is against all types of terrorism and it has continuously raised its voice against the military operation in the tribal areas. This was not the way to fight terrorism as it had given birth to more terrorists in the country.

Due to the war on terror, he said, the country faced losses of up to $ 80 billion to the economy whereas it got only $ 20 billion from the US while President Asif Zardari himself admitted that due to the war on terror Pakistan suffered losses of up to $ 68 billions.

About 34,000 citizens have been killed and as many as 5,000 armed forces personnel have died in the war against terrorism.

He urged the government to say no to foreign donations/loans that were offered with serious strings attached to them. He said that about 0.4 million people have migrated from Waziristan due to fear and insecurity.

He said that heads must roll after the military and civilian leadership failed to perform their duties, adding that the Abbotabad incident has brought shame to the nation and the country. He claimed that the country would be purged of terrorism in just 90 days if the PTI comes to power.

QUETTA: Quetta CCPO Dawood Junejo’s status has been converted to OSD over the controversial shootout in which five Chechen nationals were gunned down last week.
According to reports, CCPO Quetta, Dawood Junejo’s status was changed to “On Special Duty” as a judicial probe investigates the incident that took place at Kharotabad last week. Additional IG Ghalib Bandisha will take charge as the new CCPO of Quetta.
The move has come after the Bomb Disposal Squad submitted its report to the Balochistan IG which says that suicide jackets were not recovered from the foreigners, who were killed on Tuesday.
However, five hand grenades pins, two stop watches, a bottle of shampoo, 50 non-electric detonators, and eight passports were seized when their car was checked at the Kili Khaizai check post.
Earlier, an autopsy report revealed that the foreigners died due to gunshots, and not by an explosion.

IMF new chief selection due June 30

WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund's selection process for a new managing director will kick off with nominations Monday, and the final decision expected by June 30, the institution said late Friday.

"I am very pleased to announce that the Fund's Executive Board has adopted a procedure that allows the selection of the next managing director to take place in an open, merit-based, and transparent manner," A. Shakour Shaalan, dean of the IMF executive board, said in a statement.

The position was opened in extraordinary circumstances this week after the former head Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned in the wake of a sex scandal.

An individual "may be nominated for the position of Managing Director by a Fund Governor or an Executive Director during a nomination period which shall commence on May 23, 2011 and will close on June 10, 2011," said the IMF.

The board's aim "is to select the managing director by consensus with the objective of completing the selection process by June 30, 2011."

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde emerged Friday as Europe's choice to lead the IMF, getting a boost when a Turkish favorite ruled out his candidacy for the powerful job.

Even as leaders in emerging economies clamored for one of their own to take a job monopolized by Europeans since 1946, analysts called Lagarde the odds-on favorite to replace Strauss-Kahn after he stepped down to face sexual assault charges in New York.

Lagarde is "practically a shoo-in" as the European Union's candidate to succeed Strauss-Kahn, an EU source said. (AFP)

Spanish golf legend Ballesteros dies

MADRID: Spanish golf legend Severiano Ballesteros, one of golf's all-time greats who lifted five majors and turned a new generation on to the sport, died Saturday aged 54 three years after undergoing an operation to remove a brain tumour.

Ballesteros was a charismatic figure who led the European challenge to the decades-long supremacy of the United States.

From the mid-1970s to the 1990s, "Seve" was one of the sport's most
celebrated personalities, collecting 87 career titles before retiring in 2007 with back problems.

Known for his flamboyant and imaginative style of play, he famously won one of his three British Open titles by playing a shot from a temporary parking lot.

Ballesteros was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour after losing
consciousness at Madrid airport on October 6, 2008.

He underwent four operations to remove the tumour and reduce swelling in his skull, as well as chemotherapy. He called his battle against the tumour the "hardest challenge of my life".

Ballesteros announced his presence as a teenager in 1976 when he finished second at the British Open, just two years after turning pro aged 16.

Topping the European Tour Order of Merit that year -- he would go on to do so on another five occasions -- was a measure of compensation for being the runner-up after leading at the midway point.

In 1979, aged 21, he became the youngest winner of the British Open.

A year later, he was the first European to make the breakthrough at the Augusta Masters, opening the floodgates for the likes of Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, and his Spanish compatriot Jose Maria Olazabal.

That first of two Masters titles made him, at 23, the youngest winner
before a 21-year-old Tiger Woods broke his record in 1997.

Ballesteros was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1999, where he joined the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Golf Digest magazine in 2000 ranked him as the greatest golfer Europe has produced.

Wasim Akram criticizes PCB decision

KARACHI: Former captain of Pakistan cricket team Wasim Akram has criticized PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt’s decision to remove Shahid Afridi from captaincy on Saturday.

Wasim Akram, while addressing the media, said that Shahid Afridi has proved his mettle in recent World Cup and One Day matches. After witnessing better performance from Afridi, PCB’s decision to change captain is inappropriate.

He also said that Misbah-ul-Haq has no future as a captain due to his age and he will not be able to continue playing as a captain for a longer period of time.

When Wasim Akram was asked about the clashes between coach Waqar Younus and Shahid Afridi, he said that such disagreements between the two is nothing unusual. The coach wants to exercise complete authority and when it does not happen, such conflicts are likely to arise.

He said that frequent changes in the team and captaincy have worst effects on the team’s performance. He blamed Ijaz Butt for the atrocity of the situation.

BEIJING: Pakistan and China would jointly launch a communication satellite on August 14 to replace the SAT-1 which is on the verge of expiry, officials said.
The satellite would be sent into the orbit on the Independence Day of Pakistan as a mark of the Sino-Pak friendship, an official said after Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani`s visit to China`s Academy of Space Technology (CAST) here on Friday.
The prime minister went around several sections of the academy and observed the activities and research being carried out there.
He was briefed about the space workshop and vacuum chamber of the academy where Pakistan`s satellite PAKSAT-1R is being manufactured.
An agreement for manufacturing of the satellite by CAST was signed in 2008 during President Asif Ali Zardari`s visit to China.
EXIM Bank of China has provided a soft-term credit of 86.5 million RMB (Chinese currency) for the manufacturing of PAKSAT-1R, carrying a maturity period of 20 years.
Pakistan had launched its first satellite Badar with the Chinese cooperation in 1990. The communication satellite will have 30 years` transponders – 12 in C-Band and 18 in Ku-Band – each of 36 MHz bandwidth. The programme is in line with Pakistan`s Medium Term Development Framework objectives and may provide better satellite communications for Pakistan.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmospheric Research Commission and China Great Wall Industry Corporation are jointly developing the new satellite.

PESHAWAR: Eight suspected militants were killed on Saturday when army gunship helicopters attacked their hideouts in Pakistan’s northwestern Orakzai tribal region.
There was no independent confirmation of the attacks as the region is remote and out of bounds for journalists.
Orakzai is one of the most lawless areas in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region, which is made up of seven districts near the Afghan border.
Pakistan launched a major operation in Orakzai in March last year after militants fled a sweeping offensive in the nearby tribal district of South Waziristan.
Late last year military officials said lower Orakzai had been cleared, but the militant threat persisted in some pockets of the upper part of the area.
Around 4,000 people have been killed in militant attacks in Pakistan since July 2007.
