ISLAMABAD: Under pressure from the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leadership, former Minister Sherry Rehman — who has been advised by the government to leave the country in view of threats to her life for drafting a Bill to amend the blasphemy law — has decided not to pursue with the draft legislation.
While Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani had announced in the National Assembly on Wednesday that Ms. Rehman had agreed to withdraw the Bill, the legislator made it clear that she was not consulted. “But since the PM has announced that there cannot even be discussion on procedural amendments, and the committee announced by the party to amend laws has been disbanded, then as a PPP MNA, I have no option but to abide by the party decision in Parliament.''
Meanwhile, alarmed at the trend of accusing individuals of “blasphemy”, Citizens for Democracy (CFD) — an umbrella group of individuals and organisations opposed to the misuse of the blasphemy law and religion in politics — urged the political class to take a clear stand against this practice.
Arguing that the charge of blasphemy has become an incitement to violence and even murder, CFD said no one had the right to term anyone else a “ gustakh” (blasphemer) and those who support such accusations are equally guilty of inciting violence and murder. Further, CFD noted that those who glorified Punjab Governor Salman Taseer's assassin as a “ ghazi” (hero) are now using violence and threats of violence against those who want to refer to the slain politician as “ shaheed” (martyr). “We believe that each citizen has the right to view or term anyone as a ‘ ghazi' or a ‘ shaheed' without fear of reprisal.''
The Human Rights Watch has asked the government to “immediately drop'' blasphemy charges against 17-year-old boy for allegedly including derogatory remarks about the Prophet in his answer sheet in April 2010.
“Pakistan has set the standard for intolerance when it comes to misusing blasphemy laws, but sending a schoolboy to jail for something he scribbled on an exam paper is truly appalling. It's bad enough that a school official flagged it, but for police and judicial authorities to go ahead and lock up a teenager under these circumstances is mind boggling.”

Breaking News | Spot Fixing Case – Verdict Announced

Breaking News | Spot Fixing Case – Verdict Announced

BREAKING NEWS

The wait is over. The drama which started on August 28 2010 in the 4th test match between England and Pakistan has come to conclusion. The verdict has announced today after hearings which held last month in Doha, Qatar. Regardless of the decision, Pakistan trio still have to face courts of London on March 17 as they are Prosecuted by Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Nevertheless, the verdict has been announced through a press conference conducted by Micheal Beloff along with Justice Albie Sachs and Sharad Rao after more than 7 hours of hearing at Financial Center Doha, Qatar. This verdict was not in favor of the 3 cricketers.
It was expected that the judges will be very much lenient with Mohammed Aamer since his case is not that bad as compared to Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif. In addition to it, the fact that there is no history of negative incidents for him and off course being young were also in favor of the fast bowler. But the results are different. Aamer will face 5 years of ban to play any sort of cricket.
Furthermore, there are more bad news for Muhammad Asif and Salman Butt. Muhammad Asif will face 7 years of ban with 2 years of suspended punishment and seems like his cricket career is finished. Salman Butt will face the most severe punishment and he will face ban of 10 years with 5 years of suspended punishment.
Mohammed Aamer and Muhammad Asif agreed that they bowled deliberate no balls in the 4th test against England. The players, specially Mohammed Aamer looked really depressed after the press conference. Media is trying to approach the players but they are not able to get into any of the players. Although, players have the right to appeal against the verdict in the court of arbitration of sports in Switzerland.
Michael Beloff, in his press conference stated that ICC has strong  evidences against the players and the decision is in favor of the world of cricket.
Hopes for Mohammed Aamer playing in the world cup has vanished now and Afridi XI has to focus of their current bowling attack in the World cup later this month. Nevertheless, the 5 month drama is over now. Lets see what players will say on the decision.
Wishing Pakistan best of luck in ICC World Cup 2011.
